Neuropsychology is a branch of psychology that focuses on the relationship between the brain and behavior. It involves the study of how different structures and functions of the brain are associated with different cognitive and behavioral processes, such as memory, attention, language, perception, emotion, and executive functions. Neuropsychologists use specialized tests and assessments to evaluate these brain-behavior relationships in people with various neurological conditions or injuries, such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, epilepsy, dementia, or developmental disorders. They work in different settings, such as clinics, hospitals, research centers, schools, and forensic contexts, to help diagnose, treat, and understand brain-based disorders and dysfunctions.
Neuropsychological testing is a comprehensive assessment of cognitive and behavioral functions through a series of standardized tests and tasks. It measures various aspects of brain functioning, such as attention, memory, language, spatial abilities, problem-solving, and executive function. The process involves an evaluation of both subjective and objective data to understand how the brain processes information and how this may affect thinking, behavior, and emotions. The results of neuropsychological testing can help diagnose and monitor various neurological and psychiatric conditions, inform treatment plans, and improve overall quality of life.
Neuropsychological testing is recommended when a person shows signs of cognitive and behavioral difficulties that cannot be easily explained by physical or medical conditions. This type of assessment helps to identify any underlying brain dysfunction that might be causing the symptoms, such as difficulties with memory, attention, language, problem-solving or decision-making. Neuropsychological testing provides detailed information on a person's cognitive strengths and weaknesses, which helps in developing an effective treatment plan tailored to their specific needs. Additionally, it can also be useful in diagnosing neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, traumatic brain injury, or stroke. Overall, neuropsychological testing is recommended to provide an accurate diagnosis, to monitor changes over time, and to help individuals and their families better understand their condition and develop strategies to manage it.
Neuropsychologists are not medical doctors. They typically hold a doctoral degree in psychology or neuropsychology and specialize in studying the relationship between brain function and behavior. Neuropsychologists work closely with other healthcare professionals in treating patients with neurological conditions, but they do not have the same medical training or ability to prescribe medication as physicians.

Testing: You can expect to undergo a battery of tests to assess different aspects of cognitive function. These tests may be paper and pencil tests or computer-based tests.
Results session: After testing is complete, you will have a results session with the neuropsychologist to discuss the results of your evaluation. They will review your strengths and weaknesses and provide recommendations for treatment or further testing if needed.
Follow-up appointments: Depending on your needs, the neuropsychologist may recommend follow-up appointments for ongoing evaluation or treatment.
